The Municipality of Aringay through its Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council is among the national awardees of the 2022 Gawad KALASAG (KAlamidad at Sakuna LAbanan, SAriling Galing ang Kaligtasan) Seal for Excellence in DRRM and Humanitarian Assistance. It is the first time that the Municipality was included in the “fully compliant” seal in the 24-year history of the award. A fully compliant seal underscores the capability and ability of the municipality to effectively address the needs of vulnerable communities specifically in times of disaster. There are 135 Beyond Compliant and 436 Fully Compliant LGUs Awardees. The list of awardees was posted by the Office of the Civil Defense on its Facebook page.
The date for the 22nd GK National Awarding Ceremony, which will be done virtually, is yet to be announced. Mayor Benjamin O Sibuma, chair of the MDRRM Council congratulated the MDRRM Office, headed by Edelito D. Gajo and thanked the staff and council for working hard with selflessness in helping Aringayeños in times of disasters. The “Raniag” brand of service is what guides every DRRM worker in fulfilling its duties and responsibilities during times of disaster. Raniag is an Ilocano term that means bright. And putting the municipality in the roster of excellent LGUs in the country only means one thing, the concept of a “brilliant and outstanding service” has now become a part of the way of life of the people. It is therefore, a job well done and hats off to the unsung men and women of the Municipality who are responding to crises faced during disasters.
The Gawad KALASAG aims to recognize outstanding performance of LDCCs, private/volunteer organizations, local, national and international NGOs, donor agencies, and the communities as major stakeholders in implementing significant DRM projects and activities and, in providing humanitarian response and assistance to affected communities. It also aims to recognize individuals, groups or institutions that have shown extraordinary courage, heroism, self- sacrifice, and bravery in times of natural and human-made emergencies and disasters.
